The Mosquito

a set of Hive Mosquitos
A set of Mosquito add-on pieces contains one black and one white Mosquito. These pieces can be added to a standard Hive set and can be placed in the same way as other pieces. Once in play, a Mosquito can take on the movement ability of any creature of either colour that it is touching at the start of its move, thus changing its movement characteristics throughout the game.

In detail

-if a Mosquito is touching more than one other piece, it can take on the movement characteristics of any one of the pieces it is touching
-if a Mosquito is only touching another Mosquito at the start of a turn, it may not move at all
-a stack with a Beetle on top counts as a Beetle, i.e. a Mosquito touching such a stack cannot take on the movement characteristics of any of the pieces hidden under the Beetle
-if a Mosquito is moved as a Beetle onto the top of the Hive, it then continues to move as a Beetle until it climbs down

Mosquito in the shops

Many of the shops on the list of Hive stockists sell the Mosquito expansion, but we would advise calling the shop to check before making a long trip.

History

The original idea behind the Mosquito was to provide something extra for people who had made the effort to come a long way to games conventions, tournaments or similar events. However, as demand from people who could not travel to these events grew, the decision was made to have the Mosquito manufactured and sold alongside Hive.

We do not recommend using the Mosquito when you first start to play Hive, but some of you may find that adding the Mosquito adds some extra spice to the game once you have been playing it for a while.
